This presentation provides a foundational overview and educational outlook of the principles of health equity, health inequities, health disparities, and drivers and determinants of health. The historic and contemporary context of these issues and barriers help to shape much-needed discussions and conversations on eliminating barriers, sharing resources, and building trust.

Executive Director
DHHS Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities

Cornell P. Wright, MPA, serves as the Executive Director of the DHHS Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities. He is a subject-matter expert around the areas of health equity and disparities, minority health, and community engagement.

Wright, an active member in the health community, serves various groups, organizations, and boards including the Patient-Centered Outcome Research Institute where he serves on the Clinical Effectiveness and Decision Science Advisory Panel, and the Southeastern Health Equity Council, as part of the National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities, serving as the Co-Chair to the Social Determinants of Health Committee.

He has received awards and recognition for his contributions to health from the National Institutes of Health, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, North Carolina Central University, and the National Minority Quality Forum.

David Sousa
Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel

Curi
David Sousa is Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of Curi. Now in his twenty sixth year at Curi (formerly Medical Mutual), he has overseen the Claims, Risk Management, Information Technology, Communications, Health Policy and Human Resources functions. He leads the company’s Community and Advisory Boards in five states in its geographic footprint.

Prior to joining Curi, he practiced law in Raleigh for fifteen years and represented physicians in the defense of malpractice claims throughout North Carolina. He holds a JD degree from Wake Forest University, and his M.B.A. and B.A. from the University of Kentucky. Over his tenure with Curi he has spoken to more than 10,000 healthcare providers throughout the U.S. on a myriad of topics pertaining to healthcare liability. He has testified before legislative bodies and committees about, and has written on, healthcare liability reform issues. He is currently an advisor to the American Law Institute, representing the Medical Professional Liability Association in the revisions to the Restatement of Torts, 3rd Medical Liability section. He is a Permanent Member of the U.S. Court of Appeals Judicial Conference for the Fourth Circuit, and is admitted to practice before that court, the U.S. Supreme Court, and all N.C. state and federal district courts.

In her capacity as the Director of Legislative Relations for the North Carolina Medical Society, Sue Ann is responsible for all advocacy efforts including lobbying and grassroots mobilization, with a primary focus on the NC General Assembly. Sue Ann holds a BA in English and Communication Studies with a minor in Marketing from Campbell University and a Master of Public Administration degree with a concentration in public policy from East Carolina University. Currently, she is a first-year student in the Doctor of Health Sciences program at Campbell University.
