The challenge and variety.  Weight loss surgery is an evolving specialty and we strive to be on the leading edge.  The practice goal is to be vertically integrated and to provide all the steps for patient care from pre-op to post-op care.  We are helping patients change their lifestyle, not just providing surgery.  Everyday involves critical thinking and problem solving.  Healthcare is changing rapidly and you can’t just stay abreast of it, you have to stay ahead of it.

President of the Triangle Medical Managers Association, 2012

The opportunity to learn from others and know you are not alone.
  • Any advice you’d give to a new NCMGMA member?
“You must learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t possibly live long enough to make them all yourself.”  The other NCMGMA members are a valuable resource for practice management.  Not only networking at meetings, but following the ListServ conversations and newsletters.

Fun Facts

  • What is your favorite time of year and why?
Fall – it’s cool out and very colorful.
  • If you weren’t a practice manager – what occupation would you hold?
    World traveler
  • Tell us what’s on your playlist right now.
Keith Jarrett, jazz pianist.  I enjoy, classical music (including rock) as well as jazz and blues.
  • What is your favorite “app” you use on your smart phone? (if you have one!)
“Timed Silence” – simple and efficient.  It turns off my ringer for however long I need and remembers to turn it back on – when I forget.
  • What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I practice Tae Kwon Do with my daughter (and others).  She’s testing for her 2nd Degree Black Belt in September.  I hold a 6th Degree Master Instructor’s rank.  Martial arts is a lot like managing doctors.  You need to think quickly on your feet and be prepared for anything (and be able to dodge doctors swinging at you!).  It’s high speed chess in a constantly changing environment.  Higher rank Black Belts have matching skills so it becomes more and more strategy and tactics.
