This week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released data related to the Open Payments Program, which includes payments and transfers of value made in 2014 from group purchasing organizations and drug/device manufacturers to physicians and teaching hospitals. The agency states that the data contains information about 11.4 million financial transactions attributed to over 600,000 physicians and more than 1,100 teaching hospitals, totaling $6.49 billion.

CMS also updated data from Aug. through Dec. 2013 that was previously not personally-identifiable due to technical issues. Moving forward, CMS plans to release Open Payments data annually in June, following a physician review and dispute period.
